A Brief Background
Family Feud involves two families or groups competing against one another by guessing the top answers from a survey given to 100 people. This American TV game show was created by Mark Goodson and Bill Todman, which premiered in 1976. The Family Feud has aired several seasons over the past few decades and is currently hosted by comedian/actor, Steve Hurley. Because of its popularity, Family Feud has been adapted in several countries worldwide.
It’s a Spin-Off?!?!
Yes, you read this correctly, The Family Feud’s format actually came from another classic American TV game show, The Match Game. It is based on the Super Match portion of the Match Game where contestants gave their answers to a fill in a blank question.
The Host’s Controversial Gimmick
Richard Dawson, the Family Feud’s host during its inception, started the gimmick of kissing the female contestants. Many people criticized this because the act was ill-advised at the time. Mark Goodson conducted a poll asking viewers whether the kissing should stay or not and the majority of their responses gave an “OK signal” to the gimmick.
